September Group Reads

For some reason, September isn't exciting me as much when it comes to readathons aside from Fall into Reading Challenge and Space Opera September. I might just use this month to finish up some books that I have already started. However, I did come across some interesting group reads happening in September.

A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown

This is a group read for The Crusty ClubThe Royal Readathon happening September 13th to the 20th, and the Unfriendly Black Hotties book club . This is also a book that I brought when it was on sale because the story sounds interesting and the cover is beautiful.

Karina has become the Sultana after her mother was assassinated. She turns to ancient magic to get her mother back and for that, she needs the heart of a king. Malik's sister was stolen by a vengeful spirit and the only way to get her back is to kill the queen, Karina.

Doesn't that sound so good? Passion and assassination plots. Oh! I think it's time I finally put this on my TBR. This is a YA fantasy book as well.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

Bibliophiles Book Club picked this book as their September group read. I don't know much about this book. The author is Vietnamese from Saigon and currently lives in Massachusetts, USA. The plot revolves around a son writing a letter to his mother who cannot read. Through the letter we learn about family secrets and history. It also touches on race, class and masculinity. I'm probably not doing this book justice with how I'm describing it but the author is a New Englander and this is an LBGT book so I'll probably give it a shot. The Spanish and Italian translations are also available for the kindle on Amazon.

Let's get back to romance.

Here to Stay by Adriana Herrera

This is the September pick for Accidentally In Love Book Club. It has Latinx representation and the author is from the Caribbean.

Julia del Mar Ortiz moved to Dallas Texas with her boyfriend only to have her boyfriend ditch her and go running back to New York a few weeks later. But not everything is terrible. She has her dream job working at and running a charity for high fashion department stores. So, Texas isn't that bad. The only thing she could do without is the smart-mouthed consultant she has to work with, Rocco Quinn. He also happens to be a New Yorker.

The summary does not immediately jump out to me - I kind of wish the love interest was a Texan just to add to that small town feel - but the book has gotten a lot of positive reviews. Also, a few Latinx readathons are starting later in the month (September 15th) so this could be good to read for those challenges.

Over on goodreads, there are a couple of groups that I joined with interesting group reads. Techniqually, these group reads both started in July and are ending in September but I haven't made the time to focus on these books.

The History Book Club is reading Ghost on the Throne and Around the World in 80 Books is reading Celestial Bodies. Both of these books are available on Scribd as audiobooks. Ghost on the Throne is historical nonfiction while Celestial Bodies is women's fiction translated from Arabic. The author, Jokha Alharthi was born in Oman and graduated from Edinburgh University in the UK.
