The Duke Is But a Dream Review

The Duke Is But a Dream is the second book in the Debutante Diaries series by Anna Bennett. This is a historical romance between Lily Hartley, writer for the ton's column titled The Debutante's Revenge and Eric Nash, Duke of Stonebridge.

Lily dawns a boyish disguise when she delivers her columns so as not to have her identity discovered. One day, as she is in disguise, she ends up in the middle of a tavern brawl and gets injured. Unfortunately, when she wakes up she lost her memory. Fortunately, the Duke of Stonebridge has no problem taking care of her as she recovers her memories and who she is.

I’m not going to lie. I picked this book up mainly because the cover is so dreamy and lovely looking. I thought the amnesia plot line would be interesting as well but it was mainly the cover.

Overall this was a solid read. It did not wow me like some other romances did and the behavior of the Duke with Lily was a little unrealistic for the time period in my opinion.

It seemed like the two of them were quick to jump into bed despite him being a man of honor and ehr being a young, inexperienced heiress. I wish they showed more restraint because it would not be proper for the two to just start a physical relationship in this time period even with Lily being more of a modern type of woman. If they were found out, their relationship would have been scandalous.

Other than that, the romance was good. I felt like the final reason they could not get together at the end was a little boring. At first they could not get together because Lily did not know who she was and thought she was probably a lady’s maid or some other woman of a lower station. When they both discover who she is, they should have just gotten together right then and there.

Still, the romance was sweet enough. I would consider checking out the other books in this series.
